As a parent and a former educator, I completely understand the importance of rules.  Kids thrive on structure and routine.  However, kids also benefit from an occasional detour from these rules. . .as long as they understand that it is an exception.  Having a little fun or doing something in a different way can open lines of communication or create a special moment for you and your child.
