Want to be your own boss? Be a freelance webmaster!

There’s nothing better than starting your workday whenever you want, and working as much as you want, taking as many breaks as you want.  Sound like the dream job? The reality isn’t as far away as you think, as more and more people are becoming their own bosses and working from the comfort of their own homes.

Starting out as a Webmaster couldn’t be any easier.  If you have web design experience, it will be simpler.  But if you have never even heard of DreamWeaver, don’t fear! It’s never too late to learn. First off, you should download the following software, which a webmaster would call their tools of destruction – Macromedia Dreamweaver and Adobe Photoshop. Yes! That’s all you need to get started on the road to becoming a freelance webmaster.

Once you have the basic concepts of those products you can begin to learn the advanced techniques which are also needed, such as SEO (search engine optimization). From here you need to decide whether you make sites for personal use and monetize them or you make websites and maintain them for clients and get paid for doing so.

The one thing that is crucial in this business is reputation.  You can join many freelance sites such as www.getafreelancer.com or www.guru.com (this is just a selection of the common ones, there are plenty out there) to find work, gain education, and network.  Getting started is hard, as you have no reputation, but if you make a decent portfolio, you will stand a good chance of getting your first client. If you can deliver what you say and in the time frame specified, you will build a better reputation.  Because some sites go on a point based system, once you get the ball rolling you will be overwhelmed with clients wanting your expertise.

Before this article you probably thought it was hard to get a successful one man business going and be you own boss.  I can guarantee that if you put the time and effort in, you will succeed.  Who knows?  In time you may not be just your own boss, you may have people working for you.  Then you can slowly pull out and have a group of webmasters working for you, a successful web design and development team that can charge anything from $100-$10,000 depending on the complexity of the site. So what are you waiting for?  Take that chance and never work for anyone again!

Yeah. It seems really cool to be a Webmaster. I need to start working on some coding and programming skills. Right now, I just do blogger blogs with Google Adsense. Those are quite simple. I want to learn more about coding and SEO though and the process of installing wordpress, so I can get some real blogs. :)
